So I’ve decided to follow on from my last “best new mixes” post last month and make this a bit of a series, letting you know what’s on my headphones throughout April. I think I got a bit too ahead of myself with the whole “Summer” thing last time and have the Miami Music Week sets to blame for that.
However, with it being the first day of May as I write this I think it’s acceptable to big up the festival season with these choices…
Barely Legal – Mixmag Lab LDN
I’ve been a fan of Barely Legal for a while now, and her #SixtyMinutes mixes for Mistajam’s show on Radio 1 have been the perfect gym playlists (you can download them on the iPlayer app and listen everywhere). Infusing the sounds of Garage, Grime, Drum & Bass, Jungle, Hip Hop, Electronic and everything else you can think of makes her the one to watch at festivals this Summer and also a great place to hear new bootlegs, remixes and throwback tracks you’ve not heard in a while.
Her recent hour mix on Mixmag’s DJ Lab series in London was up there with my favourite sounds throughout April, dropping the likes of So Solid Crew, Stormzy, Pearson Sound and Ramadanman in to the live stream on a Friday afternoon. You can listen back below…
B.Traits B2B Francesca Lombardo – Chameleon Club Mix
There’s a female power theme going on here, and another one from the BBC Radio 1 Dance collection (we’re pretty lucky to have all this on demand, sounds like i’m an ambassador here for BBC but i’m not!). This B2B mix from B.Traits and Francesca Lombardo is the perfect hour of Techno sounds. I think it was broadcast at like 4am in the morning but this could be a soundtrack to a sunset festival mix or a warehouse, it fits the bill.
Featuring tracks from Midland, Cassy and a couple from Francesca Lombardo herself, I recommend giving this a listen if you’re in to that sound, I also hope to see them on B2B somewhere near me soon, what a combo.
Andy C Live from Alexandra Palace – Beats 1
Something a bit different from the two above, this hour excerpt from Andy C’s recent sell out show at Alexandra Palace just shows how mad his shows are, and if you haven’t been to see his “All Night” shows yet, do it soon.
I was lucky enough to see him last year at the 02 Academy in Brixton and if you think he could’t keep the crowd going for six hours, you’re wrong. With a selection of MC’s featured it just goes off, featuring old school Jungle to the newer sounds, this was part of Apple Music’s “Beats 1” series, but he’s put it on Soundcloud for our listening pleasure…
