Old Car New: Making The Most of an Old Motor

Older cars can get a bad rep for being dated and unreliable, but it doesn’t have to be the case. With a bit of love and attention, the right car can be a fantastic little run around, you’ll save loads of money compared with buying new and your older car probably has a certain quirk or charm that you’ll grow to love. If you’ve been searching for cheap used cars and have found something with potential, here’s what you can do to make it its best.

Improve the safety features

Old cars will have fewer safety features than their newer counterparts. The best thing you can do if you want to improve the safety would be to consider aftermarket features you can add to make the car safer. Parking sensors and cameras, forward collision warning systems and lane departure are all things to consider.

Make small repairs

Your best bet is to choose a car where the paintwork is already in reasonable condition, since a full respray or wrap can be expensive. But small areas of scuffing or scratching can be repaired with paint kits and can have the paintwork looking smart again. Go around the car and see if there are places that need to be touched up.

Change the hub caps

If the car you’ve bought has hub caps then it’s easy to replace these, simply pop them off and replace them with new ones. The wheels can have a big impact on the overall look of the car depending on the style and colour you choose so this is a fun way to switch things up a little. If the car has alloy wheels then you’ll need to look into new rims and wheels too, which can be more expensive but still well worth doing.

Think about the interior

While you’ll want the outside of the car to look great, don’t overlook the interior too- after all, this is where you’ll be spending time as the driver. If the seats are very worn, ripped or stained then it could mean they need completely upholstering, a massive and expensive job. Otherwise, you could take it to a valet who in many cases can bring up old seats to look like new with the right techniques and chemicals.

Add new technology

One of the biggest downsides to owning an older car is the lack of tech features it has. Since technology is so fast paced, cars that are a decade old can feel very dated with their lack of mod cons- but thankfully there are ways you can improve the tech. How about taking out the center console and fitting a device that connects up to your phone. You can buy these kinds of multi use gadgets which function as a sat nav, stereo and a way to view your parking sensors, as well as giving your car bluetooth so you can take calls and play music from your phone.
