The Most Crucial Lessons You Learn The First Year After Passing Your Driving Test

The day you pass your driving test is one of the big obstacles in life you’ve overcome. You learned to drive through trial and error, and no doubt a lot of stress. But this is the point when your lessons truly begin! After passing your driving test, you’ve got a long road to self-sufficiency. So with this in mind, what are the biggest lessons, practical and impractical, that you learn the first year after you pass your test?

Buying The Right Car Is A Fine Art

Ultimately, car repairs will be a big part of your life. If you bought a car that had a cheap price tag, you have only yourself to blame! So many people go for cheap and cheerful, but when you buy a car that’s got more than 100,000 miles on the clock, it won’t go the distance. It all depends on what you need to do with your car. For those people who have just passed, freedom is everything, so they zigzag up and down the country. If you’re going to do this, get a good car.

You Don’t Know It All, So Why Try?

It’s far better to be a novice and remain safety-conscious behind the wheel than someone who thinks they can do it all right away. In fact, it’s more likely that you will have an accident in the first year after you pass your driving test than at any other time during your life. So be careful if you are the only person in your friend group has passed their test always think about being responsible for all the others, even if you’re driving on a quiet road.

Having A Couple And Hitting The Road Is Not Okay!

Peer pressure occurs regardless of how old or young you are. You think that you can have a couple and still drive home safely, what if the police pull you over? You could lose your licence, and that would be the end of it! Instead, don’t even think about having one. That first year is when you have to fine-tune your skills, and as nice as it is to have a car so you can go anywhere, exercise some common sense, especially if you’ve got that friend who’s trying to push a drink down you.

You Will Always Learn

As exciting as it is to get out on the road after passing your test, even if you stay on the road for 30 years, there’s always a chance you could have a near miss. There are plenty of idiots on the road, and so you should think about being a more defensive driver. But also, don’t think that you know everything. A lot of people tend to relax as soon as they know the roads, but we don’t know the other drivers out there. Always take it upon yourself to learn. Learn about everything that you can do, like a Pass Plus but also getting out on the road and driving is one of the quickest ways to learn just how many idiots there are on the road at any given time.

  1. So true. I have my driving license for 6 years and became very confident… specially on the roads that I know well.. until one day while it was raining and I lost control of my vehicle and end on roof among the trees… That changed my whole perspective about driving and that safety always comes first.
