How Not to Look Like a Newbie at the Gym

If you’ve decided it’s finally time to get in shape and up your fitness regime, but you’re worried about making a fool of yourself in the gym, don’t let it stop you from improving your life. All of those seasoned gym-goers were once new, and you can bet that they made a few faux-pas in those early days!

Anyway, it’s pretty easy not to look like a newbie in the gym. Just take a look at these quick tips:

Start Slow

If you’re new to the world of weight training or cross training, don’t try to do too much too soon, not only could it make you look like a newbie when you push yourself too far and end up failing spectacularly, but more importantly, you could injure yourself, So, start slow, build up and look like you know what you’re doing.

Don’t Stare

If you’re heading to a gym like 24/7 Fitness, rather than an all-male place, you are going to be surrounded by lots of lovely ladies, perhaps not wearing a whole lot. If you don’t want to annoy everyone around you and look like a total newbie, then you need to fight to stare. This is a sure way for you to get banned or worse.

Make Use of a Towel

When you’ve used a machine to work up a real sweat, don’t be that guy who doesn’t clean up after himself. No one wants to use equipment that’s been drenched in someone else’s sweat, so towel down before moving on.

Don’t be a Hog

Seasoned gym-goers know that sharing is the key to happiness in the gym, which is why you should never hog a piece of equipment when the gym is busy, and you should always offer to ‘work in’ which basically means that you do a set and then let someone else do a set while you rest.

Avoid the Urge to Advise

You’d be surprised how many people in the gym are willing to give unsolicited advice to other members, even when they don’t really know what they’re doing. Don’t do this – not only is it annoying,m but your ‘advice’ could actually cause an accident or injury. Leave it to the professionals.

Wear Fresh Clothes

Wearing freshly cleaned clothes to the gym for each session is a must. No one wants to smell your stale sweat and wearing the same clothes won’t make you look like a seasoned gym-goer who’s always exercising – it will make you look slovenly and inconsiderate.

Leave Food at the Door

You might feel like you’ll starve if you don’t have a constant supply of shakes and bars to keep you going, but you really won’t, and if you eat in the gym, you’re going to make a mess of yourself and the facilities. At a pinch, carrying a couple of sweets in your pocket just in case you really do need the energy is fine, but that’s all.

Hire a Personal Trainer

Hiring a personal trainer is a great way to very quickly build up your confidence in the gym and ensure you know what you’re doing. With their advice, you’ll never look like a newbie even if you’ve never exercised before in your life.

Take note of these tips, and you will have a great time in the gym without looking like a newbie or committing any faux-pas.
